
Multi-photon absorption is the simultaneous or consecutive absorption of two or more photons by an atom, molecule or ion. Examples of simultaneous multi-photon absorption are two-photon absorption (TPA) and three-photon absorption (3PA) from ground states to excited states via virtual intermediate states.
An example of consecutive multi-photon absorptions is first the absorption of a photon that promotes an electron from the ground state to the first excited state of the atom, molecule or ion followed a short time later by the absorption of a photon (excited state absorption or ESA) that promotes the electron from the first excited state to the second excited state.
